Acrylic markers are paint in a pen: pigment in a water-based acrylic binder, fed through a nib, so the color sits on top of the surface and dries into a thin, opaque layer of paint. Alcohol markers hold dye dissolved in alcohol, which soaks into the paper and dries transparent within seconds. That is the heart of acrylic markers vs alcohol markers: one paints on the surface, the other stains into it. It decides what you can draw on, how colors blend and layer, and which paper you need.
I paint scenes and characters with brush-tip acrylic markers. There are no alcohol markers in my kit, so that side of this guide comes from makers’ specs and established marker technique, not from my own pages. My method.
The short answer
- Choose acrylic markers if you want opaque color that covers light over dark, or you draw on more than paper: canvas, wood, rocks, glass and fabric.
- Choose alcohol markers if you color line art, comics or design sketches on marker paper and want smooth, streak-free blends that build from light to dark.
- You paint scenes and characters on paper: that is what I use acrylic markers for. ENMY 60 covers and blends best of the sets I own; LET’S RESIN 72 is the one I recommend on a tight budget.
Acrylic markers vs alcohol markers side by side
| Acrylic markers | Alcohol markers | |
|---|---|---|
| Inside the pen | Water-based acrylic paint (pigment) | Dye dissolved in alcohol |
| Coverage | Opaque; light colors cover dark | Transparent; layers only get darker |
| Blending | On the page while wet, before it sets | Wet into wet, plus a colorless blender |
| Once dry | A paint layer you can paint over | Ink in the paper fibers |
| Paper | Heavy paper; little bleed-through | Bleeds through most papers; needs marker paper |
| Other surfaces | Canvas, wood, rocks, glass, fabric | Made for paper |
| Smell | Little | Solvent smell; ventilate |
| Running out | Usually replace the pen or set | Many brands sell refill ink and nibs |
How the two markers really differ
Coverage: paint on top, or ink in the paper
An acrylic marker lays down paint, so a pale color goes over a dark one and white works as a real color for highlights, stars and lettering on black paper. An alcohol marker is transparent: the white of the paper is your lightest value, and every layer makes an area darker. You plan the lights first and keep them clear.
Blending and layering
Alcohol markers are built to blend. While the ink is wet, a second color melts into the first, and a colorless blender softens edges, which is why illustrators get smooth gradients from them. Acrylic markers blend only while the paint is still wet on the page, and that window differs by set. In my own paintings, ENMY 60 has the best coverage and blending of my acrylic marker sets, while the Languo 60 ink “dries quite fast, which makes blending hard.” Once acrylic dries, the layer stays put, so you build a picture by painting over it rather than melting colors together.
Paper and surfaces
Alcohol ink spreads through paper fibers, bleeds through ordinary sketch paper and feathers past your lines, so it needs smooth, bleed-resistant marker paper and a scrap sheet behind the page. My alcohol marker guide covers paper choices. Acrylic paint sits on top, so a heavy sketchbook page works, and so do surfaces alcohol markers are not made for. My acrylic paint pen guide goes through rocks, wood, canvas, glass and fabric one by one.
Smell, refills and fading
Alcohol markers have a solvent smell, so work in a ventilated room. Many alcohol ranges are refillable: Ohuhu sells refill inks and replacement brush tips, so a dry marker can be revived. Water-based acrylic markers have little smell, but most value sets are sold whole, so the color you use up first means a new pen. Dye-based inks are known to fade in strong light, and acrylic marker makers rarely publish lightfastness ratings either, so keep finished work of both out of direct sun.
Acrylic or alcohol: which one for your projects?
| If you mostly want to… | Start with |
|---|---|
| Color comics, manga or line art | Alcohol markers |
| Draw fashion, product or interior sketches | Alcohol markers |
| Paint scenes and characters with opaque color on paper | Acrylic markers |
| Decorate rocks, wood, mugs, shoes or canvas | Acrylic markers |
| Draw on black paper | Acrylic markers |
| Add white highlights over finished color | A white acrylic marker |
Can you use acrylic and alcohol markers together?
Yes, in that order: alcohol first, acrylic on top. A common finish for alcohol-marker illustrations is a white acrylic marker for highlights, because nothing in an alcohol set can make an area lighter. The reverse is less reliable: alcohol ink will not stain through a dried paint layer, and its solvent can soften acrylic. Test the combination on scrap first.

Questions
Are acrylic markers better than alcohol markers?
Neither is better overall. Acrylic markers cover and work on many surfaces; alcohol markers blend smoothly on paper. Pick by what you draw and what you draw on.
Do acrylic markers bleed through paper?
Far less than alcohol markers, because the paint sits on top of the paper instead of soaking through it. On thin paper, heavy layers can still buckle the page, so use a heavy sketchbook.
Can you blend acrylic markers like alcohol markers?
Not the same way. You blend acrylic markers on the page while the paint is wet, and how long that lasts depends on the set. Of the sets I own, ENMY 60 blends best; Languo 60 dries too fast for easy blending.
Can you use alcohol markers on canvas, wood or rocks?
They are made for paper. On primed canvas, wood or stone, alcohol ink stains unevenly rather than covering, and light colors disappear on dark surfaces. For those, use acrylic paint pens.
