An easel holds your painting upright, at eye level, at a distance you can step back from. That sounds minor until you paint flat on a table for a while: the bottom of the canvas is farther from your eye than the top, so proportions distort, and your neck pays for hours spent hunched over. The right easel depends on where you paint and how big. This guide compares the main easel types, three researched picks (a French box easel for plein air and small studios, a floor H-frame for large canvases, a folding field easel to carry on foot), and the MEEDEN H-frame tabletop easel I own and use on my desk, labelled “I use this”.
The short answer
- You paint at a desk, small to medium canvasesa tabletop easel. I use the MEEDEN H-Frame Tabletop Easel on my desk; my tabletop easel guide compares it with a sketchbox, a 40-inch table easel and a desk stand.
- You paint indoors and outdoors, small to medium canvasesa French box easel, which is an easel, a supply drawer and a carrying case in one. The MEEDEN French easel is this type.
- You paint large canvases in one studioan H-frame studio easel, such as the U.S. Art Supply medium H-frame.
- You walk or hike to paint outdoorsa light folding field easel, such as the Mabef M/29.
Easel types compared
| Type | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| Tabletop | Small canvases, desks, kids | Sits at table height; limited canvas size |
| A-frame (lyre) | Display, light studio use | Less stable with heavy work; limited tilt |
| H-frame | Large canvases, a fixed studio | Heavy, big footprint |
| French box | Plein air, small studios, storage | Many wing nuts to learn; heavier than field tripods |
| Field / tripod | Hiking to a location | Little storage; less stable in wind |
| Display tripod | Showing finished work | Not built for painting pressure |
What to measure before buying
- Your largest canvas. Check the maximum canvas height the easel holds.
- Your working height, standing and sitting. The center of the canvas should sit near eye level.
- Tilt. Watercolorists want the board nearly flat; oil and acrylic painters want it upright or tilted forward slightly to reduce glare.
- Space. An H-frame needs a permanent corner; a French box folds into a case.
- Weight versus stability. Heavier easels resist wind and vigorous brushwork but are harder to carry.
How I chose
I sorted the picks by where you paint: home and outside, one studio corner, or a walk to the spot. For each I looked for a stated height range and canvas capacity, a hardwood frame, and an established maker. MEEDEN is a brand partner, shown on its cards; I have no partner code or free product from U.S. Art Supply or Mabef. The solid-beech H-frame tabletop easel I use at my desk covers the fourth place, a desk.
The researched picks
These three are research-based: compared from each maker’s stated height range, canvas capacity, tilt, storage and materials, and checked on each listing for the exact variant. Not tested hands-on.

MEEDEN Portable French Easel, Beech Wood

- Wood
- Beech
- Height
- 57–72 in, telescoping legs
A box easel that is a paint drawer, a tripod and a tabletop easel in one: tilt it flat for watercolor or upright for oils, and carry it outdoors on a strap.
A beech-wood French box easel: telescoping legs from 57 to 72 inches, a board that tilts from vertical to flat, a drawer with three removable dividers, an aluminum side tray, and a shoulder strap for carrying. Fold the legs away and it works as a tabletop easel too. It holds canvases up to 34 inches, according to the maker.
Good fit if
- Plein air painters who want storage and an easel in one piece
- Small studios that need an easel that folds away
Skip it if
- You paint very large canvases or want a heavy, crank-adjusted studio easel
- You hike far; light aluminum field easels weigh less

Research-basedU.S. Art Supply Medium Wooden Studio H-Frame Easel with Storage Tray
Best for large canvases at home
Paid link · I may earn from it
- Wood
- Aged German beech, oil finish (per listing)
- Height
- 67.5 in, mast extends to 96 in
A floor-standing H-frame for one spot in your home: a tall mast for canvases up to 48 inches and a supply tray that moves down for sitting or up for standing.
U.S. Art Supply states a 67.5 inch base height, a mast that extends to 96 inches, and canvases up to 48 inches high, well past the French box easel’s 34 inches. A metal ratchet moves the supply tray from 6 to 42 inches, so it works sitting or standing, and the frame folds flat for storage, per the listing.
Good fit if
- Painting canvases bigger than a tabletop or French box easel holds
- A fixed corner of a room where the easel can stay set up
Skip it if
- You paint outdoors; it is a studio easel with no case or strap
- You paint watercolor nearly flat; the listing does not say it tilts to horizontal

- Base

Worth knowing
- The 22 × 22 inch base needs floor space; measure the corner, and the ceiling if you extend the mast to 96 inches.

- Wood
- Oiled, sanded beech; brass fittings (per listing)
- Canvas
- Up to 45 in
A folding beech field easel from an Italian easel maker: a tripod you carry on a strap, with a canvas holder that pivots from upright for oils to flat for watercolor.
The listing gives about 3.5 pounds, canvases up to 45 inches, and a canvas holder that pivots from vertical to horizontal, so it suits oils upright and watercolor flat. It is the economy version of Mabef’s M/29, with a Velcro strap in place of leather. The listing shows no drawer: carry paints in a bag, and hang the bag from the easel on windy days.
Good fit if
- Walking or hiking to a painting spot, where weight matters most
- Watercolor outdoors, with the holder tilted flat
Skip it if
- You want paints stored in the easel; the listing shows no drawer or tray, unlike a French box easel
- You paint in strong wind; a light tripod moves more than a box easel

- Weight
- 3.5 lb (listing; product details say 3.8 lb)

Hardwood or softwood?
Hardwoods such as beech and oak resist dents and hold screws and wing nuts well over years of tightening. Softwoods and bamboo are lighter and cheaper but can wear at joints. For an easel you will set up and break down often, a hardwood frame with metal hardware is the durable choice.
Plein air checklist
- Easel with a tray or drawer, and a bag or strap to carry it
- A limited palette of paints and a few brushes
- A small panel or canvas board, plus a carrier to bring it home wet
- Weight for windy days: hang your bag from the easel’s center
- A hat, water, and a cloth for brushes
Setup tips for box easels
- Practice setting up at home; the first outdoor setup should not be the first setup.
- Tighten wing nuts firmly but not so hard that they strip the threads.
- Extend the legs unevenly on slopes so the box sits level.
- Fold the canvas holder down before closing the lid.
Questions
Do I need an easel to start painting?
No, but painting flat distorts proportions. A tabletop easel is a cheap fix for small work.
Can I use a French easel indoors?
Yes. Many painters keep one as their only easel because it stores supplies and folds away.
What easel for watercolor?
One that tilts close to flat, so washes do not run. French box easels and many tabletop easels do.
What about kids?
Look for a sturdy, low easel with a wide base. My kids’ art kit guide covers supplies by age.
