The best sketching pencils for beginners are not the biggest sets but the ones that teach you what each grade does. A pencil’s grade, from hard H to soft B, decides how light or dark, crisp or smudgy its mark is. Learn a handful of grades well and almost any decent set will serve you. This sketch pencil guide explains what H, HB and B mean, which grades to start with, and two sets worth buying.

How this guide was made

Research-based, not hands-on tested. Grades and lead descriptions come from each maker’s listing; the advice on grades, paper and technique is established practice. I did not draw with these sets. My method.

The short answer

Start with a set that runs from a hard grade to a soft one, such as Faber-Castell’s 9000 set of 12, from 2H to 8B. Add a kneaded eraser and paper with some tooth. If you mostly want to shade and draw portraits, Staedtler’s Mars Lumograph six-pencil tin puts its grades where the darks are.

Sketch pencil guide: what H, HB and B grades mean

Every drawing pencil core is a baked blend of graphite and clay binder, and the letters stamped on the barrel tell you the ratio:

  • H stands for hardmore clay, less graphite. As the number rises (H, 2H, 4H), the lead gets firmer, holds a sharp point longer, and leaves a paler, cleaner line.
  • B stands for blackmore graphite, less clay. As the number rises (B, 2B, 4B, 6B, 8B), the lead gets softer and more crumbly, laying down darker, velvety tone with light hand pressure.
  • HB and F sit in the centerHB balances hard and black (equivalent to a standard #2 school pencil), while F sits just on the firm side of HB and sharpens to a fine point.
Grade Lead and mark What to use it for (and where to start)
4H to 3H Very hard, faint, incised if pressed Technical layout and grid lines; optional for beginners
2H to H Firm, light, crisp, resists smudging Starter layout grade (2H): light underdrawings you will shade over
HB, F Medium-firm, balanced middle gray Starter everyday grade (HB): quick sketches, outlines and notes
B to 2B Slightly soft, dark, responsive Starter drawing grade (2B): main line work, contours and light shading
3B to 4B Soft, rich dark gray, blends easily Starter shadow grade (4B): mid-to-deep shadows and tonal studies
5B to 6B Very soft, deep matte darks Starter dark grade (6B): cast shadows, dark hair and rich contrast
7B to 8B+ Extra soft, near-black, smudges fast Deepest accents; dulls quickly and needs a light touch

Grades are not standardized across brands: one maker’s 2B can be slightly darker than another’s. Stick to one brand while you learn, and you will know what to expect from each pencil in your hand.

The five grades a beginner actually needs

If you are choosing beginner sketching pencils for the first time, 2H, HB, 2B, 4B and 6B cover nearly everything: 2H for faint layout lines, HB and 2B for main drawing, and 4B and 6B for shadows. (If you only want three pencils in a pocket case, start with HB, 2B and 4B.) Soft B grades fill in dark values faster than pressing hard with an HB pencil, and they erase more cleanly than a dented, shiny hard-pencil mark.

Grades
8B to 2H

Twelve grades from hard 2H to soft 8B in one set, from a maker with a long record in graphite. Enough range to learn what each grade does before you settle on favorites.

Twelve pencils from 2H to 8B, so every grade in the table above is in the box with steps between. Faber-Castell describes the leads as finely ground graphite and clay. It is the set to learn the scale with, then keep the grades you reach for most.

Good fit if

  • Learning the whole grade scale, from light construction lines to dark shading
  • Students and beginners who want one set that covers sketching, drawing and writing

Skip it if

  • You mostly want very dark, soft blacks; the softest grade here is 8B
  • You only shade in soft grades; a soft-grade set such as the Staedtler below is more focused

Grades
8B, 7B, 6B, 4B, 2B, HB

Six soft-leaning grades from HB to 8B in a metal tin: a focused set for shading, tonal studies and portraits rather than technical line work.

Six pencils weighted to the soft end: HB, 2B, 4B, 6B, 7B and 8B, in a metal tin. Staedtler says a bonding process makes the leads resist breaking. With no H grades, it suits shading, value studies and portraits more than precise line work; pair it with one hard pencil for layout.

Good fit if

  • Shading and value studies that need a run of soft, dark grades
  • A compact kit that travels in its own tin

Skip it if

  • You want hard grades (H and up) for light, crisp construction lines
  • You want one set to cover the whole scale

Worth knowing

  • Staedtler advises care when sharpening the softest grades; a sharp blade or a good sharpener breaks fewer points.

What else you need

  • Kneaded eraserpress and lift to lighten tone without scrubbing the paper. Shape it to a point for highlights.
  • Sharpener or craft knifea sharp handheld sharpener for everyday points; a knife and sandpaper for the long, exposed leads many artists prefer for shading.
  • Blending stumpsmooths tone without the oil from your finger.
  • Paper with toothdrawing paper from about 90 to 150 gsm grips graphite. My sketchbook guide matches paper to medium.

Four habits that improve shading fast

  1. Start light, build dark. Layer tone with a hard or middle grade first, then go softer for darks.
  2. Keep your hand off the drawing. Rest it on a scrap sheet, and work from the top down (right to left if you are left-handed) so you do not drag through finished tone.
  3. Let the pencil do the work. Press gently and switch to a softer grade for darker tone. Heavy pressure dents the paper and leaves shiny graphite that will not take more layers.
  4. Shade in one direction. Even hatching in one direction reads as smooth tone; random scribbles read as texture.

As a Christmas gift

A sketching pencil set is a small, safe Christmas gift for someone who wants to start drawing, and it fits a stocking:

Make it a drawing kit with a kneaded eraser, a blending stump, a sharpener and a toothy pad such as the Fuxi 9 × 12 in sketchbook. More ideas are in my gifts for artists guide and stocking stuffers for artists.

Questions

Are sketching pencils different from regular pencils?

A school pencil is usually a single HB. Sketching sets give you a range of grades in one consistent line, so you can choose a light or dark mark on purpose.

Graphite or charcoal for a beginner?

Graphite. It is cleaner, easier to erase and fine for detail. Charcoal gives deeper, matte blacks but smudges easily; try it once you are comfortable with tone.

Can I trace my sketch onto good paper first?

Yes. Many artists sketch loosely, then trace the final lines on a light pad. See my light box guide.

What comes after graphite?

Colored pencil uses the same layering and pressure control. My colored pencil guide covers where to go next.
