What makes a watercolor set good for travel
- Pans, not tubes. Pans are dried paint that rewets with a wet brush, so nothing leaks in a bag. Tubes have to be squeezed into a palette and dried first (see pans or tubes in my beginner guide).
- A palette that is part of the box. A lid or a fold-out plate to mix on means one less thing to carry and wash. Most travel palettes are plastic, which is light and hard to break; my ceramic vs plastic watercolor palette comparison weighs plastic against ceramic.
- A plan for water. A water brush carries its own; otherwise you need a small cup and a bottle.
- Paper, included or not. All-in-one kits bring their own; pocket boxes expect you to bring a watercolor sketchbook.
- A closure you trust. A snap, a hinge or a latch that keeps the pans shut in a bag.
All-in-one kit or pocket paint box?
The two sets I own are all-in-one kits: paint, palette, brushes and paper sold together, so a beginner can start painting the day the box arrives. The two researched picks are pocket paint boxes: paint, a palette and one brush, built to sit beside a sketchbook you choose yourself. If you already have a watercolor journal you like, a pocket box is the smaller buy; if you have nothing yet, a kit saves matching paper to paint.
How I chose
The first two are the travel sets in my kit. Water brush or water jar?
A water brush holds water in its clear barrel: squeeze it gently to wet the tip, and wipe the tip on a paper towel to change colors. It saves carrying a jar, but wiping on a towel cleans the tip more slowly than rinsing, so for big washes a small cup of water still helps. The languo case has its own water container and the Koi kit relies on its water brush, per their listings. The Fuumuui and Cotman sets come with ordinary brushes, so bring water for those.
Paper for painting on location
Paper decides how a travel painting turns out more than the paint does. For washes, look for watercolor paper of about 300 gsm (140 lb), ideally 100% cotton, which is what the Fuumuui set includes per its listing. The languo notebook is 230 gsm wood pulp, per languo: fine for small sketches and light washes. Do travel watercolor sets come with paper?
Some do. Per the listings, the Fuumuui set includes 20 sheets of 300 gsm cotton paper and the languo mini set an 80 × 80 mm notebook; the Cotman Sketchers’ Pocket Set and the Sakura Koi kit include none.
Are pans or tubes better for travel?
Pans. They are dry, so they cannot leak, and they rewet with a damp brush. Tubes suit a home palette that you fill and let dry.
How many colors does a travel watercolor set need?
Twelve well-chosen colors mix most others. Larger sets save mixing time outdoors but take more room.
Is a mini watercolor set good for kids?
Check the maker’s age note. Languo’s product page warns of a choking hazard and says the mini set is not suitable for children under 3. My kids’ art kit guide covers supplies by age.
