Diamond painting is paint-by-number with tiny resin “drills” instead of paint. The canvas is printed with colored symbols under a sticky layer; you pick up each drill with a pen and press it onto its matching symbol until the picture appears. It is calm, repetitive and forgiving, which is why it is so popular as an evening wind-down.
Research-based, not hands-on tested. Kit contents and sizes are the maker’s. Drill counts below are simple arithmetic from canvas size, not counts from a finished kit. My method.
The short answer
Start small: a canvas of around 30 to 40 cm with full coverage and round drills, so you finish it while it is still fun. The Glowing Dream Forest kit is that kind of first kit. Then add a light pad and a multi-placer pen before buying a large canvas.
Round or square drills?
- Round drills are quick and forgiving: they sit in place without needing to line up edges, and the finished piece sparkles from many angles.
- Square drills tile edge to edge for a crisp, mosaic look. They take more care to align and are harder to fix once pressed.
Most people start with round.
Full or partial drill?
- Full drill covers the whole canvas: more work, a seamless finished look.
- Partial drill leaves printed background areas uncovered: faster, and the printed parts show as flat color.
Canvas size and how long it takes
The number of drills grows with the square of the canvas size. A 35 × 35 cm full-coverage canvas with round drills of about 2.8 mm holds roughly 15,600 drills (125 × 125); a 60 × 60 cm canvas holds roughly three times as many. Choose a small canvas for your first kit, and scale up once you know your pace.
How I chose
I looked for a beginner-friendly first kit: full coverage, round drills, a small canvas, the basic tools included, and clear contents from the maker. I also looked at which tool upgrades make the biggest difference.

- 13.8 × 13.8 in (35 × 35 cm)
- Drills
- Full round
A small, low-commitment first kit: a square canvas fully covered in round drills, with the basic pen, wax and tray included. The small canvas makes it a much shorter project than a wall-size kit.
A 35 × 35 cm square canvas fully covered in round drills, with a pen, wax, a tray and bags for sorting. A small canvas and a forgiving drill shape make it a sensible way to find out whether the hobby is for you.

- Working area
- A4 (8.3 × 11.7 in)
- Thickness
- About 5 mm (0.2 in)
A thin, USB-powered tracing pad: put a sketch under clean paper and transfer lines without graphite on the back. It also lights diamond-painting canvases from below so symbols are easier to read.
Lit from below, the printed symbols are much easier to read, especially the pale ones and in the evening. The A4 size covers a small canvas like this one fully; larger canvases are worked one section at a time.
Good fit if
- Tracing sketches onto good paper, lettering, animation and quilting patterns
- Diamond painting on canvases up to about A4
Skip it if
- You work on large sheets; A3 or larger pads exist
- You want it cordless; this one needs USB power

Tools worth buying
- A light pad under the canvas so symbols are easier to read.
- A multi-placer pen tip that picks up several drills at once for large areas of one color.
- Extra wax or putty, since a kit’s small wax pad runs out on a full canvas.
- A sorting tray set or storage case so colors are not mixed.
- A roller to press finished areas down firmly.
A smoother workflow
- Peel back the protective film a strip at a time; never remove it all at once.
- Work by color within a small section, or by section filling all colors. Both work; pick one and stay consistent.
- Press each finished area firmly, then replace the film.
- When done, roll the whole canvas and frame it, or seal it with a diamond-painting sealer to keep drills from loosening.
A note on artwork
Kits with famous cartoon characters are often unlicensed copies. Look for original art, public-domain masterpieces, or kits that state they are licensed.
Questions
Is diamond painting good for beginners?
Yes. It needs no drawing or painting skill, and mistakes are easy to fix while the drill is fresh.
Can kids do diamond painting?
The drills are small parts and choking hazards, so not for young children. This kit is listed for adults.
Why are some symbols hard to read?
Small symbols and pale print are common. A light pad, good lighting and a magnifier help.
Diamond painting or paint by number?
Paint by number teaches some brush control; diamond painting is more meditative and sparkly. Both are good first “no-skill” art projects.
