A light box, or light pad, is a thin panel lit evenly from inside. Lay a sketch on it, put a clean sheet on top, and the lines show through for tracing. Artists use one to move a messy sketch onto good paper without erasing; letterers use it for guidelines; quilters, tattoo artists, animators and diamond painters all have their own uses.
Research-based, not hands-on tested. Sizes, power and brightness are the maker’s stated specs. I did not measure brightness or evenness. My method.
The short answer
For most people an A4, USB-powered, dimmable pad is right: it fits standard sketchbook pages, runs from a laptop, power bank or phone charger, and slips into a bag. The LitEnergy A4 is that pad. Go bigger (A3) if you trace large drawings, and choose rechargeable if you want no cable.
What people use them for
- Clean final drawingssketch loosely, then trace only the lines you want onto good paper.
- Lettering and calligraphya guideline sheet under the page gives perfect lines without pencil marks.
- Animationtrace frame by frame to check movement.
- Quilting, sewing and stencilingtransfer patterns onto fabric or stencil film.
- Diamond paintinglight from below makes canvas symbols easier to read.
How to choose
Size
| Size | Working area | Good for |
|---|---|---|
| A5 | 5.8 × 8.3 in | Small sketchbooks, travel |
| A4 | 8.3 × 11.7 in | Letter-size paper, most sketchbooks, small diamond canvases |
| A3 | 11.7 × 16.5 in | Large drawings, 11 × 14 in paper |
| A2 | 16.5 × 23.4 in | Posters, big diamond canvases |
Pick the size of the largest sheet you usually trace, not the largest you might.
Brightness and dimming
Brighter is better for thick paper; dimmer is kinder to your eyes on thin paper. Stepless dimming lets you match the paper. Look for flicker-free LEDs for long sessions.
Power
- USB-poweredalways on as long as it is plugged in; runs from a laptop or power bank.
- Rechargeablecordless but limited by battery life, and the battery ages.
- Mains adaptercommon on large pads.
Thickness
Thin pads (around 5 mm) sit almost level with the table, so your hand does not rest on an edge.

A thin, USB-powered tracing pad: put a sketch under clean paper and transfer lines without graphite on the back. It also lights diamond-painting canvases from below so symbols are easier to read.
An A4 working area in a pad about 5 mm thick, powered by a USB cable and dimmed by holding a touch switch. The maker lists flicker-free LEDs. It suits sketch transfer, lettering and small diamond-painting canvases, and it packs flat next to a sketchbook.
Good fit if
- Tracing sketches onto good paper, lettering, animation and quilting patterns
- Diamond painting on canvases up to about A4
Skip it if
- You work on large sheets; A3 or larger pads exist
- You want it cordless; this one needs USB power

Worth knowing
- Thick watercolor or Bristol paper lets less light through; tape both sheets down and turn the room lights off.
Specs are the maker's own figures from the product listing, not my measurements. Listing checked October 11, 2026 for this exact variant: A4 (8.3 × 11.7 in working area), black frame (model LE-A4S-B).How I pick
Tracing through thick paper
Watercolor paper and Bristol let much less light through than copy paper. To get a clean trace:
- Darken your source lines with a fine black pen.
- Turn the pad to full brightness and dim the room.
- Tape both sheets to the pad so they cannot shift.
- Trace lightly in pencil, then remove the source and finish freehand.
Using a light pad for diamond painting
Slide the canvas onto the pad, symbol side up, and turn brightness down until the printed symbols stand out without glare. The A4 size covers smaller canvases fully; for larger ones, work section by section. More in my diamond painting guide.
Care
- Wipe the surface with a soft, dry cloth; avoid solvents on the acrylic top.
- Do not cut on it: knife marks show up as bright lines.
- Store it flat.
Questions
Is tracing cheating?
Tracing your own sketch onto good paper is standard practice for illustrators. Tracing someone else’s art and calling it yours is the problem, not the tool.
Can kids use a light pad?
Yes, with the usual care for a USB device. Tracing favorite characters is a common way kids practice line control. See my kids’ art kit guide.
Will it work through a sketchbook page?
Often, if the paper is light. For heavy pages, remove the sheet or trace onto loose paper.
Using a light pad with markers? See my alcohol marker guide.
