Watercolor rewards good materials more than any other beginner medium, but not the way people expect. A modest student paint on good paper will outperform expensive paint on thin paper every time. So this guide spends as much time on paper and brushes as on the paint set itself. The researched pick is a classic tube set; after it come the three watercolor sets from my own kit, labelled “I use this”.
The short answer
Buy a student-grade set from an established maker, a few good brushes, and real watercolor paper: 300 gsm (140 lb), cold press, ideally 100% cotton. Winsor & Newton’s Cotman 20-tube set gives a balanced spread of warm and cool colors you can squeeze into your own palette. If you want everything in one small box instead, the sets from my kit below are all-in-one: Languo’s mini set for a pocket kit, Fuumuui’s travel sketchbook set for paint and cotton paper in one binder, and Fuumuui CREAMORA if you want soft, opaque grays rather than transparent color.
Pans or tubes?
- Pans are small blocks of dried paint in a tin. Wet the brush and go: ideal for travel and quick sketches. An all-in-one kit such as the Fuumuui Watercolor Travel Sketchbook Set puts pans, a mixing palette, cotton paper and a brush in one ring binder. My travel watercolor sets guide compares it with smaller pocket boxes.
- Tubes hold moist paint. Squeeze it into palette wells and let it dry, and it rewets like a pan, or use it fresh for strong, saturated washes. Tubes make it easy to mix large amounts and to refill your palette.
A tube set lets you build your own palette layout, which is why many painters start with one.
Student vs artist grade, and what “Hue” means
Student paints such as Cotman keep costs down, as Winsor & Newton itself explains, by replacing some expensive pigments with less costly alternatives. Those colors carry “Hue” in the name (Cadmium Yellow Hue, for example): they imitate the color of the original pigment with a different one. Artist-grade paints use more pigment, often single pigments, which mix more cleanly and show effects like granulation more clearly. For learning washes and mixing, student paint is the sensible start.
How I chose
I looked for a beginner set from a maker that documents its colors, a palette balanced between warm and cool versions of each primary plus earth tones, and paint the maker describes as transparent with good tinting strength, the qualities that make washes glow.

Paper matters more than paint
- Weight300 gsm (140 lb) resists buckling under washes. Lighter paper ripples unless taped and stretched.
- Fiber100% cotton paper absorbs and releases water evenly, so washes stay smooth and you can lift color. Cellulose (wood pulp) paper is cheaper and fine for practice, but washes dry faster and streak more.
- Surfacecold press (slight texture) is the all-rounder; hot press is smooth for detail; rough is heavily textured.
See my sketchbook and paper guide for more on weights. For a small 100% cotton cold press block, see my BAOHONG cold press block write-up.
Brushes and palette basics
- One round brush in a medium-large size with a fine point can do almost everything: washes with the belly, detail with the tip.
- A flat or mop brush for laying large washes.
- A white palette with wells and a mixing area, so you see true color (see my 14-well MEEDEN ceramic palette review, and ceramic vs plastic palettes for the trade-offs).
- Two water jars (or a two-well ceramic bowl such as the MEEDEN Ceramic Paint Brush Wash Bowl I use on my desk, with one compartment to rinse brushes and the other for water to mix paint), paper towels, masking tape, and a board to tape paper to.
Your first exercises
- Flat wash: an even tone across a rectangle, tilting the board so a bead of paint runs down.
- Graded wash: strong at the top, fading to clear water at the bottom.
- Wet-in-wet: drop color into wet paper and watch it bloom.
- Color wheel from three: mix a full wheel from Lemon Yellow Hue, Permanent Rose and Ultramarine. You will learn more about mixing in an hour than from any chart.
- Value study: paint a simple object in one color, light to dark.
As a Christmas gift
A watercolor gift set for beginners works best when nothing else is needed on Christmas morning:
- All in one boxthe Fuumuui travel sketchbook set puts pans, a palette, 100% cotton paper and a brush in one binder, per Fuumuui; the Languo mini set is a pocket-size watercolor starter kit.
- The tube routethe Cotman 20-tube set with a white palette, such as my 14-well MEEDEN ceramic palette, and a pad of 300 gsm cotton paper.
Add a two-well ceramic brush wash bowl for rinse and mixing water. If they already paint, give paper or a desk upgrade instead of another set. More ideas are in my gifts for artists guide and stocking stuffers for artists.
Questions
Is Cotman good enough to learn on?
It is a long-established, widely sold student watercolor. Its limits (some hue substitutes, less pigment than artist paint) matter far less than paper and practice at the start.
How long do watercolor tubes last?
Squeezed into a palette and dried, the paint keeps for a long time and rewets as needed. Cap tubes tightly so they do not dry in the tube.
Do I need masking fluid, salt and other extras?
Not to start. Learn washes, wet-in-wet and layering first; add effects later.
Should I start with watercolor or gouache?
Watercolor if you want transparent washes and are happy to plan your lights; gouache if you want flat, opaque color you can paint over. My gouache vs watercolor guide compares them point by point.
Can I use watercolor in my sketchbook?
Only if its paper is made for wet media. Ordinary drawing paper buckles and pills.
