POSCA is the paint pen people measure everything else against. It is also sold in small packs, so building a big color range one POSCA at a time adds up quickly. That is why “POSCA alternative” (or “POSCA dupe”) is one of the most common paint-pen searches. This guide compares two large value sets against the original, spec by spec, so you can decide what is worth trading. After them come the four brush-tip acrylic marker sets I own and paint with, labelled “I use this”.
ARTISTRO, Pagather and POSCA are research-based: I compared the makers’ stated tips, paint systems, color counts and surface and safety claims, and checked each listing and variant by hand. The four sets I own are hands-on, from my own paintings. I have not used POSCA, so I never compare a set I own against it first-hand. My method.
The short answer
- You want many colors for rocks, crafts and dot artARTISTRO 36. Ready to use with a dot tip; expect more layers on dark surfaces.
- You letter, journal or paint floralsPagather 72. Brush and extra-fine tips, with spare tips in the box.
- You want a brush-tip set I paint with myselfLET’S RESIN 72, the set I recommend on a tight budget, or ENMY 60, the best coverage and blending of the sets I own.
- Coverage on dark surfaces, or the same color again next monthstay with POSCA PC-5M.
- Best of botha value set for range plus POSCA singles in white and black.
Why people look past POSCA
- Color range. A POSCA starter pack gives you a handful of colors. Value sets give you dozens at once, which matters for rock painting, journaling and kids’ crafts where variety beats perfection.
- Low-stakes projects. For pumpkins, party crafts or a first try at paint pens, many buyers would rather not use premium pens.
- Tip styles POSCA does not pair. Value sets often put two tips on one pen, such as brush plus extra-fine, or fine plus dot.
What makes POSCA the benchmark
Before swapping, know what you are comparing against. According to the maker, the PC-5M:
- uses opaque, water-based paint delivered through a press-to-prime valve, which pushes a generous layer of paint;
- has a reversible nib, so a worn tip can be flipped for a second life;
- is permanent on porous surfaces and removable from most non-porous ones, such as glass;
- carries an ACMI certification, meaning a toxicologist evaluated the formula for its intended use;
- is part of a range sold in many tip sizes and one color at a time, so you can replace only the white you used up.
No value set matches all five. The question is which ones you need.
POSCA dupes: which value sets come closest?
A “dupe” usually means a cheaper pen that does the same job. None of these sets copies the PC-5M exactly: none pairs a press-to-prime valve with a reversible medium bullet. So the closest match depends on which POSCA job you want to copy.
- Closest for rocks, pumpkins and craftsARTISTRO 36. Like POSCA, its listing names a safety standard (ASTM D-4236 conformance, where POSCA has an ACMI seal). It swaps the valve for ready-to-use tips and the bullet for a dot tip, and the maker says dark surfaces may need several layers.
- Closest for lettering and fine linesPagather 72. Extra-fine and brush tips, with spare tips in the box where POSCA gives you a reversible nib.
- Closest for painting scenes on paperthe brush-tip sets I own. In my own paintings, ENMY 60 covered and blended best of the four, and LET’S RESIN 72 covered well for its low price. They are brush tools, not bullet-tip copies, and I have not painted them side by side with POSCA.
- No dupe forsingle colors. Every value set here is sold whole, so the white you use up first means a new set or a POSCA single.
Molotow and Sharpie as POSCA alternatives
These two names come up most when people ask what to buy instead of POSCA. I have not used either and neither is in the picks below, so this is research-based, from the makers’ own pages:
- Molotow ONE4ALL is the closest in design. Molotow describes a water-based acrylic marker system in 74 shades with interchangeable tips, refillable at least 50 times, and claims high opacity even on dark surfaces. Refills answer the same need as POSCA’s single colors: you top up the white you used, not the whole set.
- Sharpie Creative Markers are Sharpie’s water-based acrylic markers. They need no priming, and Sharpie says the colors show on light and dark surfaces, from paper and wood to glass and rock. Uncap-and-go ink puts them closer to the ready-to-use value sets than to POSCA’s press-to-prime valve.
How I compared
I lined each alternative up against POSCA on the five things above: paint system, nib, color range, the maker’s surface claims and the maker’s safety labeling. I read only what each maker states, and I note where a maker itself sets expectations. ARTISTRO, for example, says dark or absorbent surfaces may need several layers. That is useful honesty, and it matches how pre-activated pens generally behave.

- Tips
- 1 mm fine + 1–5 mm dot (maker's figures)
- Colors
- 36
A big color range in ready-to-use paint pens. The dot tip is built for dot art, rocks and pumpkins, and the pens need no pump-priming.
Versus POSCA: ready to use with no pumping, and many more colors in one box. You give up the valve’s heavy paint flow, the reversible nib and the medium bullet tip; the dot tip replaces it. For rocks, pumpkins and dot art, that trade often favors ARTISTRO. For opaque fills on dark surfaces, expect more layers.
Good fit if
- Rock, pumpkin and dot-art projects where many colors matter more than coverage
- Group crafting, where a big set beats a few premium pens
- Trying paint pens before spending more on a smaller premium set
Skip it if
- You need broad, flat fills; there is no medium bullet or chisel tip
- You want replaceable or reversible nibs

Worth knowing
- The maker notes dark or very absorbent surfaces may need several layers.
- Non-porous surfaces such as glass, ceramic and metal need longer drying and a sealer for handling.

Research-basedPagather Acrylic Paint Markers, 72 Colors, Fine & Brush
Best brush-tip alternative

- Tips
- Extra-fine + brush
- Colors
- 72
The brush-tip option among paint pens: paint-like strokes and lettering on paper, wood and canvas, in a range large enough for shading with color rather than mixing.
Versus the PC-5M: a brush tip and an extra-fine tip instead of one medium bullet, plus 72 colors and spare tips in the box. You give up the single-color open stock and the long track record. Choose it for lettering, florals and journaling rather than broad fills.
Good fit if
- Brush lettering, journaling and illustration on paper and canvas
- Painters who want brush-like strokes without water and cleanup
Skip it if
- Your projects are mostly broad flat fills on dark surfaces; bullet-tip pens cover faster

- Tips
- 1.8–2.5 mm medium bullet, reversible
- Colors
- 8: white, yellow, pink, red, blue, light blue, green, black
The paint pen the others are compared with: opaque water-based paint through a reversible medium nib, permanent on porous surfaces and removable from most non-porous ones, per the maker.
Still the safest choice when coverage on a dark surface matters most, when you need the same color again next month, or when a project will be handled and you want a pen with a well-documented track record.
Good fit if
- Opaque lines and fills on dark paper, wood, rock, canvas and sneakers
- Anyone who wants a known, widely stocked pen that is also sold one color at a time

What you trade away with a value set
- Coverage per layer. Pre-activated and brush tips generally lay down less paint than a primed valve pen, so dark backgrounds take more passes.
- Nib life. A reversible or replaceable nib extends a pen’s life. Check whether spares are included (Pagather) or not mentioned.
- Replacing one color. With a set, the color you use up first, usually white, is the hardest to replace alone.
- Documentation. Established brands publish more about their paint. With value sets, rely on what the listing states and test on a scrap first.
When POSCA is still worth it
- White and black. The colors that do the most work for highlights and outlines are worth buying in a pen known for opacity. Many artists pair a value set for color with a few POSCA singles for white and black.
- Customs that get handled: sneakers, phone cases, skateboards. Durability depends more on prep and sealing than on the pen, but a pen with a clear permanence statement removes one unknown.
- Repeat projects. If you are building a style, open-stock singles let you keep the same colors over time.
A hybrid kit that works
Start with one value set for range (ARTISTRO for dots and crafts, Pagather or one of my brush-tip sets for brush work), add POSCA singles in white and black, and seal finished pieces. You get most of the color for a fraction of an all-POSCA kit, and you keep the original’s strengths where they count.
For tip choice and surface prep, see my main acrylic paint pen guide. For black-paper sketchbooks that make opaque pens shine, see the sketchbook guide.
Questions
Are cheaper paint pens as opaque as POSCA?
I have not measured opacity, so I will not claim a winner. What the makers’ designs suggest: valve pens push more paint per stroke, and ARTISTRO itself notes that dark surfaces may need several layers. Plan on a second coat with any pre-activated pen.
Can I refill POSCA or the value pens?
POSCA pens are not designed to be refilled; you replace the pen, one color at a time. Neither ARTISTRO nor Pagather is sold as refillable, though Pagather includes spare tips.
Are paint pens lightfast?
Paint pen makers rarely publish lightfastness ratings for each color. For work that will hang in sunlight, seal it with a UV-resistant varnish and keep it out of direct sun.
Is it OK to say a pen is “like POSCA”?
For a buyer comparing pens, yes. POSCA is a trademark of its owner, and I am not affiliated with any of these brands.
