A tabletop easel stands on a desk or table and holds a canvas, panel or pad upright, so you paint facing the work instead of leaning over it. The best tabletop easel for painting is the one that holds your canvas size at a comfortable angle without taking over the desk. This guide covers the MEEDEN H-frame tabletop easel I use on my desk, labelled “I use this”, and three research-based picks for stored supplies, taller canvases and sketchbooks. Standing at a floor easel or painting outdoors? That is my guide to studio and plein air easels.
The short answer
- You paint small canvases at a deskan H-frame tabletop easel. I use the MEEDEN H-Frame Tabletop Easel, which holds canvases up to 23 inches high per MEEDEN.
- You want your paints stored with the easela sketchbox, such as the U.S. Art Supply sketchbox easel, with four compartments and room for canvases up to 34 inches, per the listing.
- Your canvases are taller than 23 inchesthe Jack Richeson Lyptus table easel, listed for canvases up to 40 inches.
- You work in a sketchbook or on a padthe Creative Mark Tao bamboo desk easel, which folds to 8.5 × 11 inches.
- You stand to paint, or paint outdoorsa floor or French box easel, compared in my easel guide.
Tabletop easel types compared
| Type | Best for | Trade-offs |
|---|---|---|
| H-frame | Canvases and panels at a desk | No storage; the mast caps canvas height |
| Sketchbox (box easel) | Paints and brushes stored in the easel | Heavier; more parts to open and close |
| Desk stand | Sketchbooks, pads, small panels | Small work only |
| Tabletop A-frame or tripod | Showing finished work | Not built for painting pressure |
What size tabletop easel do you need?
- Canvas height. Compare your largest canvas with the maker’s maximum: 23 inches for the MEEDEN H-frame, 34 for the U.S. Art Supply sketchbox, 40 for the Jack Richeson, per each listing.
- Height on your desk. The easel adds its own height to the desk. Aim for the center of the canvas near your seated eye level; a tall mast can lift a big canvas above it.
- Footprint. Measure the free desk depth. MEEDEN lists a 13 × 14 inch footprint, Jack Richeson an 18 × 18.25 inch base.
- Weight. From under a pound (Creative Mark) to 11 pounds (Jack Richeson), per the listings: a light easel is easy to put away after each session, a heavy one stays put under vigorous brushwork.
How I chose
I sorted the picks by what you paint at the desk: canvases, canvases with stored supplies, taller canvases, and sketchbooks. For each I looked for a stated canvas capacity, a hardwood or bamboo frame, and an established maker. MEEDEN is a brand partner and sent me the H-frame easel for free, shown on its card; I have no partner code or free product from U.S. Art Supply, Jack Richeson or Creative Mark.

Which angle for watercolor, gouache or acrylic?
Watercolor washes run on a steep board, so most painters work nearly flat or at a low angle and tilt only to move a wash. Gouache and acrylic are thicker and stay put, so they suit a more upright canvas, which keeps the whole surface the same distance from your eye. A slight forward tilt cuts glare from a window or desk lamp on wet paint.
Check the range before buying: MEEDEN lists seven settings from 41° to 78°, and Creative Mark five angles from almost upright to laid back. U.S. Art Supply gives no figures, and Jack Richeson no tilt range.
Tabletop or floor easel?
A tabletop easel suits painting seated, canvases up to about 40 inches, and a room where the easel shares the table. A floor easel suits standing work, bigger canvases and stepping back from the painting; a French box easel adds legs and a drawer for painting outdoors. My guide to studio and plein air easels compares H-frame, French box and field easels, including the MEEDEN French easel, which the maker says also works as a tabletop easel.
Questions
Is a tabletop easel good for beginners?
Yes. It takes less space than a floor easel, folds away, and lets you paint small canvases upright at the desk you already have.
What size canvas fits a tabletop easel?
It depends on the mast. MEEDEN lists 23 inches for its H-frame, U.S. Art Supply 34 inches for its sketchbox and Jack Richeson 40 inches. Check the maximum canvas height on the listing before you buy.
Can I use a tabletop easel for watercolor?
Yes, if it tilts low enough. Watercolor washes run on a steep board, so look for a stand that lays back, such as the Creative Mark Tao, or a flat setting in the specs.
Does the MEEDEN tabletop easel fold flat?
Yes. MEEDEN lists it as folding flat for storage, and in my painting Short it starts folded flat on my desk before I lift the frame upright.
